Mon·te·rí·a
Translation: "The pursuit of game with dogs"
Mission:
The goal at Monteria Kennels is the consistent production of well rounded performance hunting dogs while maintaining honest evaluation of each pup individually. Not all progeny are created equal.
Pedigree indicates what the animal should be.
Conformation indicates what the animal appears to be.
But performance indicates what the animal actually is.
- Annonymous Catahoula breeder
Our current focus is maximizing the range of our purebred Lacy Dog stock without sacrificing temperament or conformation. Hunting deep is arguably the most important trait for big game dogs if you want to actually produce big game. Unfortunately it may also be the most ignored trait in the last 20 years of Lacy Dog breeding, during which time random breeding for paper production has been the main focus of most breeders.
We also have a side project, the Muerte Cur, which are mutts bred specifically to be gritty hog dogs. They have a distinctly different look and style from the Lacy Dogs. These dogs never have been and never will be sold as purebreds.
Methods:
At Monteria Kennels, we breed tight and cull inferior product through a strict registration process. Our reliance on line breeding allows us to set those expressed traits which we find necessary in the production of superior hunting stock. The "culling" of all unproven progeny assures that only the "creme de la creme" of Monteria Kennels will reproduce registered progeny themselves.
No kennel, breeding or cross ever has or ever will produce 100% perfect results. No two pups, even within the same litter, are created equal. We at Monteria Kennels will always remain cognizant of that fact.
We also recognize the need for outcrossing to other proven Lacy Dogs to keep our line healthy. However, even on an outcross, we protect our lines and traits by only outcrossing to other linebred stock which expresses set traits similar to those we strive for. Monteria Kennels and Bayed Blue Kennels work very closely to provide one another with suitable outcross stock.
The one thing that you will never find at Monteria Kennels is random breeding, mating two unrelated dogs just because they are purebred and will produce a papered litter.
